I love how the simplest things are used to remind us of the gospel. This is just something I was thinking about and wanted to share it
I recently ordered some shoes from Zappos.com. I am sure most of you have heard of this company and if you haven’t then you should check them out. I don’t usually order clothes or shoes especially on line, but Zappos has the largest and most extensive selection of shoes I have ever seen. Obviously, the downside of ordering on-line is that you can’t try anything on, you have to pay shipping and then you have to wait. Well,...
Zappos doesn’t charge shipping either way, so you can order two sizes of your shoe and send the one that doesn’t fit back for free. This detail combined with the selection of shoes is what sells me on this company. The free shipping is for standard delivery time, approximately 3-5 business days. The day after I placed my order I received an email from Zappos telling me that they had upgraded my shipping to 2-day delivery at no extra charge and for no other reason except that they could. This was great news because this meant that I would get my shoes on the day I was leaving for a trip.
Well as it happens, I got the shoes the next day, a day early! When does that ever happen with the US Postal service? I know this is such a dumb little thing, but I was excited nonetheless. As I left on my trip wearing my new shoes, I was thinking about how rare it is in our society that we get something for nothing, and what’s more, something we didn’t ask for. I started thinking about the gospel, and how difficult it is to believe that it is a gift. The righteousness of Christ is bestowed upon us because that is what needed to happen to put us in a position of acceptance with our Creator, and so it happened. I then started thinking about grace and how hard it is to believe yet it is a simple truth. I don’t know when I think about my experience with Zappos, I want to tell someone how cool this company is and about how they went above and beyond what they had to do. Then I think about how understanding the gospel makes me want to tell someone about how cool it is. When you get a gift that truly is a good gift, like free shipping or grace, the last thing I want to do is keep it to myself and second to last is take advantage of the giver. It took a long time for me to admit that I need the Gospel everyday, but who would of thought that I would find the gospel of Jesus in the sole of my shoes on this particular day? OK, that was really corny. I’ll admit it.
