Dallas Morning News Review of Kingdom Coming, by Michelle Goldberg

Linda Crosson, the assistant religion editor at the Dallas Morning News (best religion section among all newspapers), sent me a review copy of Michelle Goldberg's Kingdom Coming.  Goldberg's book has been an Amazon Top 100 seller and is getting a huge reception in some circles. My review is here.

I was limited to 200 words so I only focused on Goldberg's concluding chapter.  Later I may write a more extensive treatment here at CGO that reviews her earlier chapters.  You can't say much-- not nearly enough to be adequate-- in 200 words.  I have much more to say in the way of criticism, both positive and negative criticism, but that will have to wait.

Goldberg is smart, did a lot of homework, and is a good writer.  But you need to know the genre-- this is explicitly (in the conclusion) an agenda book. This is a culture wars manifesto book. Her explicit disavowal of dialogue and reconciliation is troubling, to understate. I deplore with her any attempts to create a theocracy, but I believe the way forward is a commitment to civility, dialogue. Resisting Nietzschean Will-to-Power perspective and techniques will serve our society better than a call to cultural arms.
